They might be not painful, it's you that is painful they are sucking and laying eggs.While you are scratching and itching form the moving and hatching their young. But the have shampoo to get rid of them,with a local anesthetic for the pain. so you are actually tearing your skin up. The bigger infestation the more painful it become,and the more you begin to see blood. If you see blood that means that the infestation is bad.

they are microscopic insects that eat away at your skin and penetrate inside the skin feeding off on your blood
