My father told me that the local druggist in the 1930s had a store and he drank coke all the time, his Doctor told him he was dieing somehow from drinking so much coke, he had his sons smash all the bottles of drinks on the floor.
I was at a convenience store getting a Pepsi and this women told me that, THAT killed my sister.
I don't know the answer to your question exactly.
But its only when you drink to much when it will hurt you I believe.

I'm not sure about the term for it, but a former roomate of mine was on medication permanently because he drank too many soft drinks as a child and it tore up his stomach.
