NO, it isn't. I have COPD and I am on oxygen 24/7 and many other medications. First of all, Bryon 1015, people with COPD do not have a higher chance of contracting cancer. In fact, if someone with COPD quits smoking and you don't, you have a higher chance than I do. CANCER has nothing to do with COPD.

Chances are I will die from something other than my disease. There is not a cure, but if you stop smoking, you can live a long time.

COPD stand for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is the destruction of the avioli, the tiny sacs that exchange the oxygen. Think of them as tiny clusters of grapes, in COPD the are damaged and have now become one large grape. Oxygen exchange becomes difficult and the patient must work very hard to breathe. They use accessory (chest) muscles and often develop a barrel chest. In later stages they require oxygen supplement. COPD is an ongoing process and the patient will die, there is no cure. It is not, however, a cancer.

No. COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can either be emphysema or bronchitis. Emphysema is the destruction of your alveoli and was already mentioned in the preceeding answer while bronchitis is the inflamation of you airways. COPD in a majority of cases is caused by smoking. Smoking can cause cancer but not COPD.
