Some naval oranges I buy are very sweet and tasty but sometimes I find one that's very bitter. What's the best way to tell what it'll taste like before I buy it? Thanks.

The ones with the number "4012" on the sticker are the best

Some stores actually have samples you can taste! In general you want a fruit that is very heavy feeling for how big it is and I do think that Florida oranges are more consistent for high quality. Fruit that isn't seedless is usually very high quality. People will only put up with seeds if they're getting something better than the average California seedless orange. Of course you need to go to a store that has a high turnover so that the fruit is fresh. Skin color means nothing--some of the best oranges I've ever tasted were purely green and yellow.

If I just pick individual oranges in the grocery store, I'm usually awful at picking good ones. I've finally found that Sunkist brand oranges from Florida are usually good, so unless I see Sunkist on that little sticker on the peel, I don't even bother with it.

Pick the ones that are large and fragrant. Sunkist is probably the best. I personally stay away from oranges sold in bags. Those usually aren't the best.

Two ways. Buy in December, January and February for California Navels AND feel the weight if light feeling don't buy.

one good way, aside from smelling them for the nice fresh orange scent is to feel their weight... if it feels heavy for its size, it's probably a good and juicy one... the juicier an orange is, the heavier it is...

it's still a crap shoot, but this can help
