make a slab cake, not too thick, then get a cookie cutter and cut shapes in to he cake, maybe love hearts, animals, stars, angels, anything really that you can get a big cookie cutter for, you can either sandwich two of the shapes together with icing or cream or whatever, and ice and decortate the tops!! voila cute and original
or you could make normal cup cakes and decorate them like lady bugs
or really pretty icing and srinkles and lolies

I'm not sure about decoration but a fun way to do flavoring is Kool-Aid. I was making a cake for my stepmom's birthday when I was about twelve and I wanted make her a cake but it was spur of the moment idea kids get. So I used a white cake mix, I then added Mountian Berry Kool-aid ( I knew it was her favorite kind) and it turned out great. That was many years ago, I have found it to be a hit with kids. It can make really neat tasting cupcakes just use a box of regular cake mix (white or yellow work equally well but don't use any other type). When mixing just add your child favorite Kool-Aid flavor ( this works well for any kind of flavor save lemon or lime), add 1/2 cup of white granulated sugar to batter. Mix well. This work well as a cake or cupcake. You could decorate anyway you like but I would not recommend chocolate icing or sprinkles. Good Luck.

I did ice cream cone cupcakes for my kids' classes and they were a huge hit! Really, really easy. Hot tip: when frosting these, use a cake decorator bag w/tips for an extra-special look. Here's a link with a cool pic:

Also, cupcakes made like this are less messy. You don't get all the crumbs you normally do when the kids try to peel the paper off!

Also craft stores such as Michael's, A.C. Moore, and Wal-Mart have a lot of cupcake accessories to chose from. They have cupcake pan liners in different colors or prints. There are edible decorations you can place on the tops of the cupcakes.

I made kitty cupcakes last year and they were so cute.
You make the cupcakes, frost them with white frosting,
Take vanilla wafers cut them in triangles for the ears, take m&m's for the nose/eyes and string black licorice for the whiskers. I didn't do the bows and they were just as cute. Good luck!

For considered one of my birthdays while i grow to be youthful I had a rainbow cake. its the place you bake the familiar cake poke holes in a circle around the cake and fill them with non-gelled gelatin, then u enable it cool you narrow back the cake while your waiting and you have rainbow stripes contained in the cake. you're able to do exactly the comparable with cupcakes, yet as quickly as I did my cake the colors weren't sturdy adequate because of the fact the spongy consistency of the cake soaked it into different places so while u pass around and fill the holes with the gelatin i prefer to advise filling them lower back so which you will discover the colors extra advantageous. desire this helped, and chuffed Birthday to your daughter(: P.S.- you are able to lookup this recipe on the cyber web to get particular training, in case you are able to no longer locate them then touch me and ill get you the recipe.
