I went for a scan for hiv and syphilis on the 12th week after i had sex and they came out negative.
Does that mean i'm free from STD?

It means you're free from syphilis and HIV, IF you haven't had unprotected sex since the test was administered. If you've had unprotected sex, since the day you went for the test, the results don't count. Testing for HIV should be repeated again at 6 months, and again after 1 year. The tests you had also don't screen for common STDs like, bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis (viral), herpes, human papillomavirus, pelvic inflammatory disease, and trichomoniasis. Men can and do carry these STD and pass them to partners.

I don't know why people are still out there having unprotected sex. All those STDs do exist. They're not uncommon. I'm not in a major city and our emergency room sees them everyday.

Get a thorough exam. Then insist on condoms ALL THE TIME. Most partners won't complain, if you don't given them a choice. Best of all, you're caring for yourself both physically and mentally, by not having to worry about STDs.

P.S. Condoms won't protect you from crab lice. Those are pretty common too.

No. HIV tends to develop/show-up on the tests AROUND 3 months after suspected infection. Peoples bodies are different and you need to account for that. Wait another month and get tested again. If they're negative then, then you're probably fine.

With regards to syphilis, it wouldn't appear that you haven't contracted it. But tests can always have false answers. The test in one month should clarify everything.

Keep in mind that you should not have sex at all for the next month.

it means u probably don't have syphilis but as for HIV., it can take 2 weeks to six months after infection for the HIV to build up in the blood stream before it can be detected in the blood stream, so u may need to be retested within/or just after that time frame.

I've read that HIV take three months to show up in your system so....you should be clear I guess, but when in doubt, get checked again.
