dont worry, whenever a patient dies a panel looks over the case and judges what the surgeon did in surgery and if he were to found to have made any mistakes, he wouldnt have a license anymore. there is always a risk in surgery and an aneurysm isnt too uncommon. still, the chances of her being treated far outweigh the risks

This is major surgery and your fears are justified. An aneurysm is very different than bypass surgery. An aneurysm is virtually like a balloon that can rupture at any moment but bypass surgery is technically easier as we simply add new pathways for the blood to the heart itself. The risk is far less than dealing with an aneurysm. I am not downplay the risk factor but the benefits surpass the risk. If by medical tests, your mother needs the surgery but you feel uncomfortable with the same surgeon, then consider a different surgeon. It takes many years of actual practice to become a heart surgeon and both the medical community and CPC (clinico-pathological conferences) to control the ability or the inability of the surgeon. A CPC is sort of a trial of the surgeon. A board of a pathologist, chief of surgery and others evaluate each case where a patient has died under the care of a hospital. A pathologist is the bearer of fact, for good or bad for the technical skill of the surgeon. Contact some of the other physicians in your area and explain your fears. While they won't openly malign another physician, you can judge their replies. I have lost patients too (I am an Internal Medicine physician), but sometimes inspite of our best efforts, nothing works. I am confident that your surgeon is capable.

Anyerism rupture is pretty rare, totally different from triple bypass surgery. If you are worried that the surgeon is not good enough, then you should request a second opinion. Not all heart surgeons are the same. That being said, this MD obviously has been doing heart surgery for 20 plus years, and all that experience behind him probably means he's pretty good. Every heart surgery is different, depending on a person's health history (diabetes, CAD, COPD, obesity etc) I wouldnt worry that your mother is going to have a negative outcome just because your father did. Good luck to her.

Don't be scared...your Dad had a condition that not even the best of surgeons could have seen or fixed...it happens all the time. Do you have other family to help you ??? Clergy ???
You don't say how old you are so it's hard to know what to say.
My mother-in-law had heart surgery last yr and also had a new hip put in....plus she's had cancer twice and has COPD. She's doing great....
Not every thing is so scary...have friends help you...have another Dr talk to you...(they will if you ask for help....)
It'll be Ok... [[[[ ]]]]
Luck to YOU and your Mom !

Are you scared that it is the same surgeon doing the surgery? Then better have a chat with him/ her.

Medicine is so advanced now and has reduced post operative complexities and also has improved care to such an extent that if ever post-operative problems do occur, the doctors and hospitals are better equipped to handle those.

SO relax and never let your anxiety pass on to the patient. Lack of confidence can rub on to someone very easily and you dont want tochange your mother's present state for the worst.

SO sit with the surgeon in question and get alll your insecurities clarified.

Open heart surgery techniques and post operative care and montioring have progressed in leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Im sure that the surgeon is fully competent with the latest surgical techniques as all surgeons must have recertification every so number of years.

Ask your doctor about the risk assesment of your mother if your mom consents. Im sure the benefits outweighs the risks.

Well, I can't stop you from being scared, but i can tell you the following. Although not risk free, bypass surgery 20 years later is as routine as tieing your shoes. I've been taking care of these patients post-operatively for 25 years. I'll go out on a limb here and tell you, based on what you told us, that your mom is going to do fine. So be scared, it's reasonable, but expect a successful surgery.

Medicine has changed ALOT in 20 years!!!

An anurism would not have had anything to do with the surgery.

At least you know the surgeon has plenty of experience.

If it will make you feel better, ask to have a quick word to the surgeon about your mum's surgery to help put you at ease.

And you better take care of your own health and learn from your parent's mistakes. Heart disease is genetic.

God bless you both, my thoughts are with you.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
