Hello! She needs ideas for a "by the pool" cake party!! Not black widow spiders or naked ladies!! HAA! (I love reading the energy though)!!
Make a cake in the shape of a Fish. If you don't want to do it, maybe a local bakery could. Then you could make a mini fish cake for the birthday boy. Bake a sheet cake or two for double layer. cut out the shape of a fish with a knife. Frost and then pipe on zig-zags or stripes or circles. Be creative!! You could even have extra cupcakes around with blue, green, yellow icing and stick the little drink umbrellas in them!!
I think pearl-like colors of aqua, lime green, bright yellow would be so sweet.........! Have so much fun!

People this is for a BABY. No black widow cakes. hahah!!
Honestly, your son will not know what is going on. Does that sound crappy? The party is something for you to take a picture of, and for the other people there. He can probably take or leave the whole thing, in fact, a big production would just stress him out, with all the strangers all at once, none of his familiar routines, etc. Of course, celebrate but keep your guest of honor in mind.
Make something he can eat, maybe an ICE CREAM cake, and plan the rest of the party around the other guests, particularly the kids that are there. I would steer clear of any unfamiliar foods for a baby's party, in case he gets sick from it...just the old familiar foods, maybe try a milestone food like fresh chunks of banana instead of baby food bananas, know what I mean? Even ice cream I would see if he tolerates well wayyyyy before the party...and go with ice cream cake only if he does like it. I would particularly avoid high sugars and chocolate, both that can give babies diarrhea. You don't want to make him sick for his own party.
Also remember to keep it short or plan a nap for the baby because the birthday boy will be exhausted and cranky if there is too much excitement for too long.
There is a cool trick...for an aquarium dessert.
Make about 3 boxes of blue jello, or maybe two blue and one green, all mixed for a turquoise color. Get a NEW gallon sized fishbowl.
Cover the bottom about a quarter inch with jello. Put a layer of crushed up jolly ranchers (different colors) for the gravel, when it is just thick enough to hold the gravel and keep them on the bottom without floating them when you add more jello.
Keep the jello at room temp between layers, if you want to speed the gelling process, put the jello in the freezer but keep an eye on it.
When the gravel is set, add more jello, every inch or so, add things like gummy fish, sharks, octopuses, etc. staggered in random places on the surface of the jello, so nothing is really in a LINE (so the layers don't show) and put back into the fridge to set those items before adding more. You can put toy boat on top, with gummy peach rings for life preservers and maybe a fish poking out of the top. Chill until just before serving.
This is easy but timing is critical.

Bake a sponge cake and remove a hollow from the top of the cake to make a swimming pool.
Prepare some blue jelly, and once set, cut into cubes.
Ice the cake with icing tinted blue, place the jelly cubes in the hollow to create water. Decorate using rafts made from musk sticks (stuck together with a little icing), round sweets for beachballs, cocktail umbrellas and small dolls for swimmers.
Decorate the outside of the cake with freckles, placing in a zigzag pattern up and down the sides of the cake.

Well it depends on the age of your son and what is deemed apropriate and not appropriate for the age. But something a little 'gross' young kids could find entertaining. For example a cake made like a black widow spider might entertain young boys. Make it into the shape of a spider. Use red food coloring on a white cake. Cover it in black chocolate with a little red for the hourglass. Then when you cut it up it is red like blood underneath the black chocolate. I am thinking back to when I was young and what I think might have been 'cool'. A little weird I know, but different for sure!

If they have Barbie in a cake, they must have GI Joe or whoever your son might enjoy. Check your local bakeries by giving them a call. Taste of Home Cooking magazine has a children's section every issue that is always interesting, you could look at your public library for back issues to get some cute ideas. Happy B-Day to your son.

an Under The Sea theme might be fun. You didn't say how old he is going to be, but Spongebob Squarepants seems to be hot right now. With a water theme, you can use lots of soft blue colors and get miniatures to decorate your cake with.

Blue icing and teddy grahams with swim suits piped on. Or if he is like my kids, a few gummy sharks in the pool too.
