Not all, but most can. Aids, syphillis and chlamidya most definatly can but some diseases like herpes can only be tested when they are present, in this case, in the actove form of a coldsore. It cannot be detected by urine.

A swab is usually taken for hpv, in the form of a smear test [pap test] for girls and a small swab being inserted into the eye of the penis for a guy. It doesnt take long and can be uncomfortable, for both sexes.

Also, id just like to clear up what a previous answer said. Yes there is avaccine for hpv for girls, but its only available provatly and is not issued by nhs doctors. It costs a lot of money to get it at the moment.

Blood for some such as the AIDS antibody and syphilis.

Swabs are used in the throat and of the reproductive tract for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

I don't know of a test for HPV, but there is a immunization against it that all young gals should get before they ever have sex. That will protect against the main causes of genital warts and cervical cancer due to an STD.

I've never heard that they can test for herpes unless it is during an outbreak.

There are a lot of bad bugs out there, each with it's own test

Okay - so you have an std - or think you have!

The easiest and most reliable way is to obviously see a doctor. Which you'll need to do in order to get a urine or blood test, or smear or swab, or simply an observation and a few lines of questions!

They catch most of them in a blood test, or sometimes even a skin test. I can't think of any that would require any other samples, but there may be one I'm missing.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.
