3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. Go on something called the DASH diet. Studies has shown that it can start reducing blood pressure in as little as 14 days!
You can also start exercising more. Cardio workouts over time will cause arteries and blood vessels to grow in order to move oxygen to the muscles. This in turn will makes the vessels bigger and reduce blood pressure.

Try this simple Accupressure method.
Take a deep breath and hold it.
Place your 4 fingers on your neck just besides your larynx where you will distinctly feel the pulse. Count till 5 and then leave your breath slowly.
Now take your other hand to the other side of your neck and repeat the same with your fingers.

Watch your diet very carefully. I did it. I haven never taken high blood pressure medication before, and sure didn't want to have to start, so when my blood pressure started edging up into the danger zone, I begged my doctor to give me time to bring it down myself. Avoid salt, mostly. Do some online research. It's really hard to balance. You need calcium, but eating some dairy products (like ice cream) can raise your cholesterol levels. I used to eat ice cream regularly, now I hardly ever indulge.

Hypertension is sustained elevation of resting systolic BP (≥ 140 mm Hg), diastolic BP (≥ 90 mm Hg), or both. Hypertension with no known cause (primary; formerly, essential hypertension) is most common; hypertension with an identified cause (secondary hypertension) is usually due to a renal disorder. Usually, no symptoms develop unless hypertension is severe or long-standing. Diagnosis is by sphygmomanometry. Tests may be done to determine cause, assess damage, and identify other cardiovascular risk factors. Treatment involves lifestyle changes and drugs, including diuretics, β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and Ca channel blockers.
The following steps may indirectly help to reduce hypertension.
Low sodium intake.(Sodium chloride, Monosodium glutamate, Sodium bicarbonate)
*Regular exercise.
*Stop tobacco smoking.
*Stop consuming alcohol.
*Reduce fat and oils in the diet. Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. This kind of diet includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish (not canned in oil), vegetables, poultry, egg whites, and polyunsaturated oils and margarines (corn, safflower, canola, and soybean oils). Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, lard, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
*Obesity - In obese subjects, losing a kilogram of mass generally reduces blood pressure by 2 mmHg. (Abdominal circumference should be less than 100 cms)
*Control Diabetes Mellitus.
*Avoid worry and stress.
*Avoid occupational, aircraft and roadway noise exposure.
To be on the safe side, it is advised to take drugs on prescription of the doctor in order to avoid heart attack, renal failure or stroke.
If there exists an aneurysm (ballooning of the artery) in the brain or in the aorta without your knowledge, it may gradually grow bigger and bigger and burst abruptly causing fatal condition.
