I've done quite a bit of research into controlling blood sugar since becoming a type 2 diabetic three years ago. I've put most of it down on my diabetes info webpage:

How to Reduce Sugar Cravings
Many different herbal and holistic traditions believe that sugar cravings are a sign of imbalance or lack of nutrition. Having a sweet treat once in a while is obviously different from having to have it twice a day. It may seem like sugar is a harmless addiction but “overdosing” on sugar on a daily basis can lead to blood sugar issues, diabetes, and weight problems.
Sugar cravings can be related to a lack of protein in the diet. This is especially common for vegetarians who could be replacing energy-providing protein with sugar. Sugar gives us an immediate boost but it also makes us hit a low that can start the sugar craving cycle all over again.
You might want to consider upping your protein intake with each meal. Protein powders in smoothies and juices are an easy way to add protein and vitamins to your daily nutrition. Carrying nuts and snacking on them when you start getting a sugar craving might alleviate the edge.
Chinese herbalists suggest creating a balance in your diet by eating more bitters. Eating more bitters such as arugula, radicchio, and endive will help balance out the sweet and reduce cravings,
Eat plenty of fruits that have a low gylcemic index like berries, apples, and pears. They add extra fiber and help stabilize blood sugar.
Avoid skipping meals because this makes you crave something sweet with a passion.
Alleviating stress may also help to soother you sugar cravings.
Cutting back on sweets may be a hug challenge this time of the year, but it will also cut make on your mood swings.

There are many things that can be done to overcome type II diabetes, and improve the life of a Type I diabetic.
Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:
Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picloinate
If you are serious about not being falling victim to diabetes needlessly, get a copy of "One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject.
It helped me, and my brother, who was dying. We lead mostly normal lives now. Best of luck.

Diet and exercise are used to control blood sugar levels. See an endocrinologist and then a nutritionist for guidance for your particular type of diabetes, if that is what you have and why you are indeed having medicines to control your BSL.
