I understand that the operation is dangerous and can be fatal. How might my friend go about assembling information on this topic and speaking with knowledgeable professionals who are in a position to advise on and/or perform this procedure?

Letterman had his surgery done at New York-Presbyterian Hospital (affiliated with Cornell and Columbia Universities). However, there are dozens of hospitals in NYC that are more than qualified to perform the procedure. All surgery has the potential to be fatal, but bypass can be performed very safely. Nationwide, the risk of dying during bypass is about 3% and is higher in patients who are older or undergoing emergency surgery. Your friend's best bet is to ask his primary doctor who he/she recommends and then set up an appointment where he can have all his questions answered.
