There are actually a lot of omurice(= omuraisu) recipes in Japan so I can't really give you all of them here but I can just give you one basic recipe:
( makes 2 servings)
rice (1 cup)
minced yellow onion, minced carrot, ground chicken ( suitable amount ---approximately 1 to 2 tablespoons each)
tomato ketchup (1 tablespoon)
salt and white pepper to taste
garlic powder to taste
white wine or sake ( 1 teaspoon )
eggs (4) * use two eggs for one serving
milk ( 2 tablespoons)
1. make rice.
I recommend that you should get Japanese rice to make this dish. You can get Japanese rice at Japanese food stores or any Asian stores or sometimes at normal grocery stores like Safeway, Smiths, etc.
Usually 1 cup of rice can make 2 bowls of rice, meaning 1 cup of rice can feed approximately two people. So adjust the amount of rice according to the number of people that you want to cook this dish for.
And depending on the rice (since there are different types of Japanese rices), the amount of water that you need to use varies, so always read the instruction before making rice.
2. fry minced yellow onion, minced carrot, ground chicken or cubed chicken with olive oil or vegetable oil and butter, and flavor them with salt and white pepper.
* if you don't like to mince vegetables, you can use frozen mixed vegetables containing peas, carrots and corn.
3, add rice to 2 with white wine or Japanese rice wine( = sake).
4. add salt, pepper, garlic powder to flavor 3.
5. add tomato ketchup to 4 and mix well.
6. put 5 aside on a plate.
7. make an omelet.
Mix eggs and milk in a bowl with salt and white pepper. Then, pour the mixture to a heated frying pan. You shouldn't use high heat to make an omelet, and you need to try not to burn the omelet. It should have smooth and beautiful yellow color. Fry both sides of the omelet if you want to.
8. Place the omelet on the top of the fried rice.
When you place the omelet on the top of the fried rice, it's better that the size of the omelet is much bigger than that of the fried rice because you can tuck the excess part of the omelet into the bottom of the fried rice to make the shape like in the picture of the website that I linked below.
9. add tomato ketchup or tomato sauce on the top of the omurice and enjoy eating it!!
