Lychee is believed to originate in China where it was introduced to many countries including Thailand. There are many cultivars known today, these cultivars are mainly derived from the selection of seedling plants. Confusion arose in the naming of lychee cultivars in many countries.
In Thailand, the lychee cultivars are divided into two groups, namely, the lowland or tropical lychee as they are well adapted and commercially grown in the central region with warm winter months. Almost 20 cultivars are known in this group. The second group of lychee is known as the sub-tropical lychee. Almost 10 cultivars are known, and they are commercially grown in the northern part of the country where the winter months are rather cool. These lychee cultivars cover a major production area and are considered to contribute more economical value than the low land lychee.

I find no reference for it anywhere. Are you sure you spelled it right? At least not as an exotic fruit, maybe you're thinking of Elton John.)
