It can help weight loss in women with PCOS. Bad things..it gave me a bit of wind to start with (burping) but tthat soon settled down and I had no problems with diahorreah.
I was taking it for type 2 diabetes but Im off it now(diet and exercise controlled);
If you are recently diagnosed take a look at the site below. It has loads of good sensible advice and is written by a member here who is diabetic;

Hi, it can help with weight loss if you are on a healthy diet. And yes it can give you some diaoreah or atleast make you very regular. :)
My advice is take it religiously. Metformin does not stay in your system so if you forget to take it for even 1 day it's like your body getting used to it again.
Make sure you always take it straight after eating a meal, if you take in on an empty stomach it will make you feel very seedy and sick to the stomach. I know from personal experience and it is not good!
good luck with it. take it regularly with meals and you'll be fine.

Hi,
I went on Diaformin (trade name for Metaformin) 500mg 3x a day in November for insulin resistance. I moved this up to 1000mg 3 x a day over a month or so. I have lost 11kg with sensible diet and 3 or 4 walk and exercise sessions per week. No side effects, no runs, maybe some burping (not in public). I recommend it. If you can do your bit, the weight loss should happen. If you need some dietary help, reply and I will recommend a dietitian.
Cheers

Metformin (INN; trade names Glucophage, Diabex, Diaformin, Fortamet, Riomet, Glumetza and others) is an anti-diabetic drug from the biguanide class of oral hypoglycemic agents.
The most common side effect of metformin is gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea and vomiting. In a clinical trial of 286 subjects, 53.2% of the 141 who were given Metformin IR (as opposed to placebo) reported diarrhea, versus 11.7% for placebo, and 25.5% reported nausea/vomiting, versus 8.3% for those on placebo. That is why it may contribute to weight loss.

I have been taking metformin for several years now. It hasn't helped me with weight loss. And I am not completely sure that it has helped control the sugars. I haven't run into any complications with it though.
BUT, my doctors think I am unusual in that it hasn't helped with weight loss, and they feel that it has helped control the sugars.
