My sister has had open heart surgery twice. Once at 18 months and once at 2 years of age. It is likely to be painful for some time because your sternum (I assume, unless you had a thoracic procedure ) was cut open. As your sternum is under constant motion from breathing, it is a slow healer. You will ache for a few months. Remember, your body has just undergone a huge trauma. Accept that you need to heal and give yourself time. Don't try to rush the process as you can end up doing more harm and put your recovery back even further.

Take care and good luck.

Open Heart surgery is now practised in neonates, paediatric subjects and adults as well. It is a relatively safe proceedure nowadays.

You should take your prescribed painkillers regularly and the pain will GRADUALLY subside.
