My husband and I just transferred to Japan and are moving into our rental house soon. We're hosting a housewarming party to meet the guys from his office and so I can meet all the wives. The only parties I've ever hosted were just a "let's get drunk" party and a baby shower, so I'm really confused what to do here. Do I provide activities of any sort? Since it's just a rental with little furniture, should I still give tours or just leave them free to wander? And how do I cope with only having one toilet and a whole bunch of Marines and their wives?

Okay, I'm actually looking more for something to keep everyone entertained. I can't do spouse activities since they're not all married, and some of them have their wife back in the States. Also, outside ruins the whole point of a housewarming. Any ideas on times?

ok dont panic to start. breath in and out slowly. Now if there is a nice river or lake around and the weather is good outside, have it outside. that would be relaxing. if u do want it inside, dont panic, put a few activities out such as do u know ur wife/husband very well. then the other spouyse has to write 10 things about themselves and then the other spouse has to guess it. dont worry about the toliet thing. they will just have to deal with it.now what dinner r u going to fix? i htink you should do pasta.well good luck

A house warming party is for the people to see the house and bring a gift for the house.Really you do not have to have any entertainment.Music softly playing,appetizers,punch,chips and dips.It's a nibble and talk theme.Whatever colors you have in each room-put on the invitations.I have been to party's that had money trees for the couple.That's the way to go if you aren't able to register at different stores.Congratulation---OH, they can have a time set on the invitation....

Sounds like a military bash to me. And it sounds like a perfect time to make some new friends and get to know your husbands co-workers. Don't worry about the ice-breakers, but you might want to get name tags so that everybody can remember who is who. As for cuisine, keep it simple and light. This isn't a sit-down dinner or luncheon. A vegetable platter is always good with a good ranch dressing. Sliced meats and cold cuts for sandwiches would add some protein. Pasta or potato salad is always welcome as well as chips and dip. Cupcakes for dessert and bowls of nuts and m & m's are good. Lots of beer, wine, soda, bottled water....and sake for a nice toast!

Keep it simple, beer and wine with some appitizers and some backround music. No need for activities - housewarming parties are just for mingling.

A great ice breaker would be pot luck. That way everyone has something they enjoy to eat, you can observe the preferences of the group for your next engagement and it will save money.
