Many sugar free or low sugar/low carb foods contain sugar alcohols, which are nasty. It is sugar which is chemically altered to not be digested, so it passes through your body, often causing gas and diahrrea. Even a little bit of it will make me violently ill. They must be listed on the nutritional label if a food contains them, look under Sugars on the label, they are listed there.

Sugar alcohols, anything swetened with a "hol", sorbitol, manitol, etc, will give you the squirts like youve never seen. And that is only after some brutal gas. I ate a box of sugar free mentos during a 5 hour drive and literally had to have the windows open the whole wy because the stench my body was producing was killing me. You are better off eating real candy and deal with compensating for the carbs.

Sorbitol and other sugar alcohols act as laxatives. That explains the diarrhea and gas.

Interestingly, if you eat enough candy made with sugar alcohols like sorbitol, malitol, etc.,you can develop liver damage that looks like liver damage from alcoholism.

It is better to stick to real food with low sugar content.

Because the sweeteners used in them, mostly Sorbitol and Manitol have a natural laxative effect. There is supposed to be a warning about these effects on the packages.

Sugar alcohols can cause diarrhea. Also, some people experience adverse effects of other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.
