I saw many items I was unfamiliar with, such as a bag of what looked like small, brownish, irregularly shaped sugar pebbles. My daughter thinks it was called "Kaita", but that may have been the brand, and it had two words. I also saw a bag of oval shaped white candy covered in sesame seeds. What are these and which foods have you tried that you liked from an Indian market?

It could have been..ahh what is the name..raw sugar of some sort. It even comes in little packets for your tea. As far as candies I am also not sure. Some candies are really good and some are quite scary to the American palate.

I love Indian food. Lamb vindaloo being my fave. HOT, comforting, and yummy. Also chicken tikka. Not sure of the spelling. Naan is the most wonderful bread in the world with clarified butter. YUM. Try a few dishes in an Indian restaurant to see what you like. I have seen many "mixes" for things like this in Indian grocery stores but it's like buying "brown gravy mix". Acceptable, but not like the real thing. Also, you can't just dump some American curry powder in a dish and expect it to be good. Curry is a very complicated combination of spices and you will be disappointed with the McCormick variety.

I love to cook but I just CANNOT do Indian cusine. It is so complicated. It is much better to find a good Indian restaurant and spend a couple of hours there sampling everything on the menu.

You were probably looking at raw brown sugar cut up in small pieces. You are used to the brown sugar powder. It's called Jaggery. The second thing is just that it is brown sugar or some form of sugar candy dipped in sesame seeds.

Indian market --if you like variations of sauces try and get some chutney.. you can find all flavors and variations. Mangoed pickle you can choose a spicy one or sweet one. Papadam is good. There is another thing called Chakra its a dry flat bread that is a good light snack.

Part of the excitement of browsing/shopping in ethnic markets especially with a child is to explore and ask questions. From my experience, the staff should be happy to share information with you. If they don't, they don't deserve to be in business and so report them to the Better Business Bureau.

While I am familiar with Indian foods and cuisine, it is difficult to help with your vague description. Chinese, Greeks, Armenians and Albanians to name a few, use sesame seeds in their baked and other prepared foods much, so again, I suggest you just ASK.

Good luck and enjoy browsing.

"Poop-in-a-bag" it's aweful and makes you stink for days as it exits the body and comes out of your pores.

Nothing is good there.
