The important thing to know is that the potato is a nightshade. If your potato has been around a bit and is green just under the skin, it is poisonous.
That's why they're kept in pantries. Rather than out on the counter where the sun brings out the poison.
They can also cause arthritis to hurt more.

Potatoes can last for a really long time. Keep them in a cool dark place, or the fridge on low humidity.
Potatoes are bad when they are covered with dark rotten looking spots, are shrunken and soft, are green. They turn green from exposure to bright light and the green ones will make you sick, so be sure to not store them in a place where they gey a lot of bright light. I've had them in my fridge for months, I actually like to use older potatoes for cooking because some of the starches have changed to sugar and they are sweeter.

It depends on what condition they were when you bought them.
Store them in a large paper bag or container away from sunlight and damp. New season potatoes if stored correctly should last for months. Under your house as long as it is dry is a good place to store them.

U can keep potatoes for the whole winter if u keep them in a cool dark place. I lived in potato county before. That's how the people used to do many decades ago.

Depends on the humidity in your kitchen; the hotter it is, the faster potatoes will mature and then rot. Also, if you want them to last, don't keep them with onions! Onions give off gases that speed up the maturation process and spoil potatoes.

If kept in a cool, dry place they can last up to a few weeks. Once they get soft they are no good

I've had a bag of spuds in the refrigerator for almost two months, and I popped two in the microwave last night and they came out fine.
