This sounds to me like asthma -- your airways swell, so it's hard to get air in. I share the problem you describe, and it's asthma. An allergist can give you a good diagnosis. A lot of people think that people with asthma have to be wheezing, but that's not true. Some of us just have trouble taking in a deep breath, and it's not a good feeling and makes exercise more difficult. The good news is that asthma can be treated. Do you have any allergies? I assume you're not feverish and have not had the flu or a bad cold. Make an appointment with your physician.

if you've been sick with a chest cold, its normal to some extent to not be able to take a deep breathe without coughing. could also be that you've developed pnuemonia if you have been ill. otherwise, it has happened to me before, but only for a short time, not being able to take a deep breath right after waking in the morning. it felt kind of like how a charlie horse feels when you try to move your calf- i think it is a muscle spasm of some sort affecting your lungs. but you should certainly go in and get this looked at if its lasted for this duration. you could be asthmatic or have some sort of allergy, or pnuemonia or some other blockage, object, or mass in your lungs. you might try some of that spray like for asthma- my wife uses that when her breathing gets bad and she says it works great. What Is Asthma? Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives. When your asthma symptoms become worse than usual, it is called an asthma episode or attack. During an asthma attack, muscles around the airways tighten up, making the airways narrower so less air flows through. Inflammation increases, and the airways become more swollen and even narrower. Cells in the airways may also make more mucus than usual. This extra mucus also narrows the airways. These changes make it harder to breathe.

I would recommend seeing a physician as soon as possible, it is obviously a respiratory condition that needs to be treated immediately. Perhaps the doctor will take a chest x ray and will decide if antibiotics are in order.
