People who don't know what fortunes are. These cookies should be called "platitude cookies" or "old expression cookies". I haven't seen an actual FORTUNE from a fortune cookie since sometime in the 1980s.

I have to assume that the education system is to blame - as the older writers retired, the younger writers came in without a clue about what a "fortune" is.

I don't actually know who writes the fortunes, but I can tell you it is probably NOT a Chinese person. They don't have fortune cookies in China. It is strictly an American thing.

monkeys are trained to type a certain phrase over and over. they are also chained to thier desks to prevent them from escaping. the
restaurant manager goes to the back and sees if they're doing thier work correctly. as the fortunes are finished typing they are kept inside a barrel where the fortune cookie maker can just grab a handful when needed. if there's any fortunes running out, the restaurant manager tells the monkey's what they need more of and the monkey's start hauling *** and typing whatever fortune phrase they're low on.
