Hospice, as I was told, is not only for end of life care. It is also for pain management, particularly in the elderly. I would like to know of anyone who suffered at the hands of hospice by having their loved ones decline while under their care when they weren't in decline until hospice came on board. My father just died (Jan 5, 07) because of the drugs they administered for pain, in particular opioids (various kinds of morphines) when he was not a candidate for this drug because of previous respiratory problems. They were supposed to be the caregivers, not the executioner.

I feel sorry for your loss, I agree hospice is not only for end of life but also for suuportive care. I have been taught that people do go home from hospice and I have cared for a few who did graduate (as we called them) from the hospice. It is sad that your late father had to suffer the deadliest possible side effects of the pain meds, you have a right to ask the hospice doctor for a peer chart review, if that helps any. In this case the other doctor will give his/her opinion on how the meds were administered, correct or incorrect, may he rest in peace, amin

I am so sorry about your father. Kay gives excellent advice. Speak with the bereavement counselor at the hospice. It is often difficult to accept our loved ones are at end of life. Your pain is palpable. There are no words that will soften your loss. But your articulating your feelings as you are can be helpful. A journal, filled with all the feelings, the thoughts, anger, hurt, regrets, good memories, difficult memories, stream of consciousness... Let it flow. Wishing you peace of mind and strength of spirit .
