I wish I had the answer. I know that they are still raising funds for research and when I see the advertisements, they don't really give any hint that they are even close to finding the answers.

I hope that one day they day. Maybe it's a very simple thing and the researchers on not even aware that the answer is under their nose.

Well since Type 1 (autoimmunity) and Type 2 (insulin resistance)diabetes are very different diseases, I don't think a cure for one will help the other (although there has been one study that may reduce inflammation in the beta cells, a concern for both types. That was the Sick Kids Hospital discovery).

I think we are making some great progress in what we know about Type 1 diabetes. Many discoveries are found "accidently" so there is no real way to predict if a cure is in 10 years, 20 years, 5 years, or tomorrow.

I think we will see MANY promising avenues to treat autoimmune diabetes, and that one day people may have a choice in how they want to get "cured". The main issue we have to overcome in Type 1 diabetes is stopping the autoimmunity, which causes the disease in the first place. Then we can look at ways to either regenerate (new studies say this is possible) or transplant new islet cells.

With Type 2 diabetes, there are many efforts focused on prevention and lifestyle modification. Many people can achieve normal blood glucose levels if they stay committed to a healthy lifestyle. A win-win. New complication treatments and medications will help those who already have complications from the disease live longer and healthier. Right now, the best way to treat insulin resistance is through lifestyle modification. It has worked better than any medication on the market.

Type I and type II diabetes are very different diseases. Type I is caused by failure of the pancreas to produce insulin. Some people have received pancreas transplants in an effort to cure this type of diabetes.

Type II is caused by a failure of the body to respond to insulin. The best way to "cure" this disease is to prevent it by maintaining a healthy weight.

There is currently no cure for either type of diabetes. Complications of either type can be devastating, and the best way to avoid complications is to maintain blood sugars as close to normal as possible.

There are new discoveries happening right now, but each of those discoveries are still years away because of the need to test them and ensure that they are safe for humans.

Stem cell research is close, and the latest is that it appears that capcascin - the "hot" taste in chili peppers, etc., appears to work wonders in lab testing. If you have diabetes, listen to your doc, eat healthy and stay active!
