There are two types of Diabetes - type 1 and type 2.
In type one diabetes, the white blood cells that normally kill deseases destroy the beta cells in the pancreas. These are the cells that make insulin, so people with type 1 diabetes have to inject themselves with insulin. We dont know why people get this kind, but there is a genetic componant.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common, and is developed when a person overworks the beta cells/pancreas. Insulin is made when a person eats carbohydrates, so the more of these you eat, the more you work the beta cells. (This is why people in India, where the diet is very carbohydrate rich, suffer the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the world.)
The symptoms for both types (when untreated) include urinating a lot, a feeling like stiff muscles/lactic acid, and dry mouth. The complications range from blindness to amputation of extremities like feet.
I have had type 1 since I was a little kid, and when my blood suger gets too high, I get the stiff muscles, and when I get too low you lose coordination and act sort of drunk. You can ever pass out and convulse if your blood suger is very very low.
Some people just get type 1, but a healthy diet without too many carbs, and some exercise cuts way down on the risk of getting type 2.

Diabetes is a lifelong condition where either your body does not produce enough insulin, or your body cannot use the insulin it produces. Your body needs insulin to change the sugar from food into energy. There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1, where the body makes little or no insulin
Type 2, where the body makes insulin but cannot use it properly
Gestational Diabetes, where the body is not able to properly use insulin during pregnancy. This type of diabetes goes away after the baby is born.

nine out of ten people with diabetes have Type 2

Control colestroal level, control suger intake, healthy eating, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight

Type 1 diabetes (the severe kind always requiring insulin) is a non-preventable autoimmune disease often first diagnosed in children and teens. It has NOTHING to do with diet, exercise, or weight. Most children and teens with diabetes have this kind, although Type 2 diabetes is children is increasing due to increasing childhood obesity. There is nothing a person with Type 1 diabetes "did wrong". It can be diagnosed in adults, although it used to be referred to as Juvenile Diabetes. Most people have never heard about Type 1 diabetes, or are confused about what it is. It is an autoimmune insulin deficiency.

Type 2 diabetes, the common form, is insulin resistance often triggered by poor diet, lack of exercise, and obesity in people who have the genes for the disease. This is the kind of diabetes you hear about in the the media and that most people know about. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating small portions of healthy food, and exercising can prevent about 80% of cases of Type 2 diabetes.

Some symptoms of Type 1 are: Frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea. When you become close to falling into a coma (DKA), you may have an acetone smell on your breath, a rapid heartbeat, disorientation, and rapid, shallow breathing. This can be quickly fatal if not treated. These symptoms generally appear suddenly or over a short period of time, progressively getting worse.

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes are (allthough some do not have symptoms or they are not very obvious): Frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, sores that won't heal, and frequent infections. Some people with hypoglycemia go on to develop Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is very easy to screen for, and Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented with simple changes in most cases.

It depends on what kind of diabetes you're talking about. Some have it from birth. But most people nowadays are talking about the kind you get later on in life. A person can get type ! or type 2 later in life. This type of diabetes is usually brought on by obesity. Many people who have lost enough weight to get down to their average weight range find that their diabetes clears up on its own, or at least becomes much more manageable. So controlling weight is the easiest way to prevent diabetes.

some of the symptoms of diabetes that i had were i was always thirsty, always hungry, always sleepy, always grouchy, had to go to the bathroom a lot, worn out, couldn't concentrate in school, etc. the cause can be by a virus or heredity. excercise and eating right can prevent some types of diabetes. but not the kind i have which is type one...and to treat it i check my blood sugar often and take insulin shot after i eat and then before i go to sleep . other ways are you take pill or your doctor puts you on a plan. if you think that you have it you might wanna go get checked out.

The symptoms are weakness, frequent urination, dizziness, abnormal blood sugar readings and some others. WebMD and other sites provide detailed explanations of symptoms. If you think you might be the best thing to do is go to the doctor and get checked and rule it out or get it diagnosed b/c it can be fatal if not treated.
