I've heard that Mexicans were the ones that invented the 'corn' Tortilla and that Hondurans were the ones that invented the 'flour' Tortilla.

It was without a doubt the Mexicans. But which ones? Both the Mayas of the south and the Nahuatl race (modern name for the Aztecs) of the central region claim to have been the originators of the tortilla. (The central state of Tlaxcala takes its name from the Nahuatl word for tortilla)

Considering that the tortilla has been a staple of the Mexican diet north, central and south for thousands of years, it may be a while before we know for sure. The northern states of Mexico also claim the origin of the flour tortilla as it was there, (not the central or southern states, nor Honduras) that wheat was grown in ancient times......

I gotta go with the Mexicans. My friend from Chihuahua tells me that the white flour tortilla is from the north of Mexico. That makes more sense than Honduras!

The word itself is Spanish for "little cake" (torta). In Spain they'd been making them with eggs.
When the Spanish came to the Americas, they saw Mayan people in what's now Mexico making flatbreads out of corn. So the Spanish called them tortillas too.

Tortillas or "tlaxcalli" as they were known in the native Nahuatl language, are thought to date back as far as 10,000 B.C. According to Mayan legend, tortillas were invented in ancient times by a peasant for his hungry king.
