I regularly wake up during the night and find that my breathing has become very shallow or seems to have stopped completely and I find myself gasping for air. This is sometimes accompanied by a buzzing sensation in my head, kind of like the head rush you can get from standing up too quickly, I seem to be still asleep when I become aware of this sensation (sounds impossible, I know!...) what I mean is that my body is still paralysed by sleep when my mind registers that it's happening and I have to concentrate hard to shake my head and wake myself up. This sometimes happens even when I don't stop breathing (or at least I'm not aware that I've stopped breathing). I'm male, 31, I'm healthy, I don't smoke and I'm not overweight, I don't snore but I do often get a blocked nose, I don't drink very often and my diet is pretty good, so what could it be? And what should I do about it? Help please!

i was the same mate, kept sitting up in bed after stopping breathing. As you say still happens while you sleep. I kept falling off the bed.
After tests i was diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea and wear a breathing mask to bed each night. I've worn the mask for about 6 months and i sleep like a baby. Told i may wear the mask for life. It gets easier in time. Ask to be refer ed mate, good luck

It sounds like sleep apnea. If what you say is accurate, then it's definitely dangerous. There's sleep disorder centers you should look into at the advice of a physician. I thought there was one in Maryland but Google it anyway. Check out the link below, I find it better than WebMD.

Find a sleep clinic and make an appoinment! There are several sleeping disorders that are diaganosed every year.
Most major hospitals have these clinics. Call a nurse at your clinic or contact your health insurance provider.

Sounds like sleep apnoea to me. Get your GP to refer you to a respiratory clinic soon.

Coping without sleep can actually lead to many many disorders, get sleep cracked and you will find the other symptoms dissapear too. DONT let your GP fob you off either.

Good luck and do see your GP

Hey,
It sounds to me like you have a case of sleep apnea. My husband has it and he's only 28yrs old. It's not something you should pay no attention to. Try and get to a doc. asap and have him check you out. They may have to put you on the same machine that my husband is on. (you only have to use it while you sleep) it opens up the back of your throat and it helps you to breath and get the sleep you need... and so on...

See your family doctor and describe your symptoms exactly. What you have may be a sleeping disorder, sleep apnea.
He can refer you to a sleep disorder clinic. They put monitors on you and ask you to slepp in their lab sevral times. Then those monitors will record what exactly happens to your body as you sleep. Then one by one, the specialist will try to fix each problem area.

Sounds like you have sleep apnea (my brother-in-law was just diagnosed with this)... meaning you actually quit breathing and that's what wakes you up. Make an appointment to see your doctor immediately.

I have had the mind awake and body not responding thing before and it is truly scary and as to your other problem it sounds like you need to get down the docs.

Get your GP to refer you to a Consultant in sleep apnoea. It is not unusual and nothing to worry about but it can be treated successfully.
