He doesn't want to see a doctor. He's afraid that if someone finds out he has aids, they'll tell the authorities and have him put on surveillance. Then all the people would know.

He had unsafe sex with a prostitute 4 years ago. Now he wants to get married. He doesn't want his would be wife and children to have aids.

How do you know if you have aids? What are the symptoms? If the only way to find out is to see a doctor, please give me some advice on how to persuade him.

Even if he weren't getting married, he ought to get tested to relieve his mind. After a wait of four years, one test should do it. If sexually active during these intervening 4 years, two tests 6 months apart would do it. Couples often get tested before marriage and they are committing themselves to one partner. There is no surveillance list. Confidentiality is highly maintained—this is more true now by federal mandate on all medical records under HIPPA regulations. His plan to marry may well be the lever to get him to move. Until he gets tested, he has AIDS on his mind and as a preoccupation. The tests will not create a problem if it doesn't exist. Knowledge is power.
