I quit smoking two months ago and im only 20 years old and i had only smoked for around 4 years and i exercise alot. I do a lot of long distance cycling and BMX riding but lately I have been having problems with my breathing. Everytime I would take a breath it was like a half breath and would make my muscles in my neck and my chest tighten up. This used to happen over the summer as well after long rides on my bike.

Please DO NOT ignore these symptoms! Any practitioner would immediately investigate (and hopefully) eliminate the possibility of heart problems. I'll be honest here - breathlessness and chest pain upon exertion would lead me to suspect angina of some form, which is a heart condition which must be treated. Note : HOWEVER healthy your husband is, get this checked out at the earliest opportunity, as heart problems can present at any age. (There are other explanations for the symptoms, but these are irrelevent, as investigating the above is far more important!)

The only thing I can come up with is dyspnea:

Patients who are severely anemic may develop dyspnea if they exercise vigorously. Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may cause shortness of breath, and so may gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Both chronic anxiety disorders z of physical fitness can also cause episodes of dyspnea. Deformities of the chest or obesity can cause dyspnea by limiting the movement of the chest wall and the ability of the lungs to fill completely.

I have to agree with the nurse. You need to take this seriously and see your doctor. Assuming your heart is not the cause, then seriously consider the possibility that a hiatal hernia is causing your symptoms.

Best wishes and good luck.
