Normal, according to the site below, is 135 to 200. So, is 233 so totally, off-the-wall wacky? Ask your doctor if you can have a trial period of six months to fix your diet and get more exercise. In that time, you should be able to see if a) you have the true desire to make life-changes to lower your cholesterol, b) life-changes actually *can* affect your cholesterol and c) if the levels are getting worse.

It's too true that sometimes the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak -- in that case, you should swallow your pride and take the medicine. You can always take medicine AND make life-changes.

I think this site has a good basic overall. You don't mention your HDL and LDL levels, and those are important for making your plan.

Cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes all seem to be related to the same life-style changes, so you might look into a diabetic diet, or a diet that is meant to support people with heart disease.

My dad had heart disease and my maternal grandmother diabetes, so I've been very interested in learning how to avoid those things. Cholesterol seems to be a symptom -- I've been very lucky to have good levels, but I know it's something I need to keep an eye on. You have not-so-good levels, but it might be a good idea to keep an eye on other symptoms for heart disease and diabetes, and make changes accordingly. Good luck!

I have been diagnosed with the same thing just recently. My doctor suggested that if I choose not to take medication, then the only other option is to be on a restrictive diet. Perhaps try adding oatmeal (flavored or non) to your diet, even perhaps whole grain cereals. Avoid fatty foods (trust me.... the hardest thing to do!). Instead of whole milk or 2% milk, cut it down to plain ol' lowfat. If you like cheese, stick to lowfat montery jack or other "white" cheeses, but stay far away from swiss cheese. Add more vegetables and fruits to your diet. There are many articles from the American Heart Association and several other well known organizations that will provide you information on how to go about a Cholesterol free diet. Good luck in your ventures!

All the time nowadays. I have diabetes, my previous doctor was always telling me how well I was doing, he was really encouraging and positive with the accent on healthy eating and lifestyle, the only drug was the one to help control the glucose levels. The current doc is the opposite, telling me I can look forward to a rapid decline in my health, with a diet of drugs, very negative and now I'm in danger of believing her, despite the fact that my cholesterol, kidney and liver tests etc always come back normal. The blood pressure rises when I have to visit the doctor and goes up further when she suggests yet more pills - just in case. I recently had a small blip with my glucose levels and I swear that doc jumped with glee because something had changed slightly! Just give me a daily ration of garlic, apple, oats, olive oil and positive thinking.

It is highly depend your age. if you are between 20-30, this level of cholestrol requires medical therapy plus dietary regimen and exercise. However in ages over 60 it requires only the latter two remedies. And in 20-30 age group this level of plasma cholestrol maybe due to a genetic background. Anyway the best food for you is consumption of fish oil by amount 30 gr per day which can be provided by consumption of baked fresh food, and avoidance of taking certain foods such as egg, high amount of red meat. if you are in 20-30 age group you certainly shall be under care of a cardiologist or endocrinologist.

Try Niacin, but not the time release form. It dropped my cholesterol and LDL 30 points with no change in diet, or any medication. I was on the statin for a year, and it did nothing, and I mean nothing, .but drain my wallet a little. Oatmeal and fiber rich foods and veggies can help too.

A remarkable new treatment for cholesterol and heart disease (EBOO-SAFE) is now being practiced in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Japan amongst other places. It is a blood dialysis treatment similar in procedure to kidney dialysis, I have had this treatment myself is effective and safe. No pain, drugs, surgery or side effects. It is not yet practiced in any English speaking countries where extensive clinical trials are required before approval, as being a non- pharmaceutical treatment that can't be patented no company is much interested in investing in such trials. (thou I believe a clinical trial is now underway at the university of sienna in Italy). email to eboo-safe@gmail.com for further details or referral to an EBOO practicing physician.
