Whenever we talk about any body part, we divide it into sections. As far as the lungs, those sections are referred to as lobes. If we were talking about the stomach, it would be quadrants.
Lungs are left upper lobe, left lower lobe, and right upper lobe, right lower lobe.
The word 'lobe' does NOT refer to any specific length or width of the lung.
The amount that the surgeons want to remove could be any measurement. You will need to find out exactly what that measurement is from them.
Hope this answers your question and I hope everything turns out okay with your mom.

Each lung is divided into multiple lobes. Actually the right and left differ in their anatomy. Here is an excellent web site which breaks down what each is:

Basically, they are proposing to cut out a portion of the lung. It may or may not be the entire lobe (1/3 to 1/2 of the lung). Check with the surgeon to be sure how much will be cut out. It is likely that she will not be able to breathe as deeply in the future, but she will probably breathe fine under normal activity levels. Also check with the doctor regarding exercise - vigorous exercise is not for everyone, depending on their medical condition.

the right lung has 3 lobes and the left lung has 2 lobes. each lobe is divided by a fissure. the removal of a lobe is called a lobectomy. a lobe is basically a segment or section of the lung

A friend of mine was diagnosed with pneumonia, no other symptoms with the exception of watery persistent cough, when it did not go away they did another Xray and found a tumor. She was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma (a type of cancer). She went thru chemotherapy for 3 months and is now cancer free - no surgery, no radiation. Good luck to you all.
