I am a type 2 diabetic diagnosed last year after having gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies. Keytones are detected in urine after your body starts to burn fat cells and they are a type of acid. They are not good for your system, however your sugars being in check are more important. I know this because I was sent to a Maternal/Fetal specialist who put me on what he referred to as a Body Builders Diet. It was very restricted and had very little carbs involved, and they assured me I would most definetly have keytones. It consisted of mostly protein for my caloric intake. However, if you are experiencing keytones and your are pregnant with gestational diabetes, you need to be under the monitoring of a physician as this will insure your best bet at a healthy baby and a healthy you. My children were born healthy so try not to become to worried. I wish you the best of luck!

There can be different reasons for getting ketones - the ones I know are firstly the kind that people with diabetes can get if our blood sugar is too high or if we are sick - these can seriously damage our organs and long term health. Secondly, starvation keetones - most people have a trace of keetones in their urine in the morning because they've not eaten all night - the atkins diet takes this to the extreme because cutting out all carbs gives starvation keetones so Dr A. actually told people that keetones are good as they help you loose weight!!! (BTW they do make you loose wieght but are not good!!!). I'm pretty sure there are other causes of ketones but I don't know what they are. If you have diabetes or pregnancy diabetes they are probably related to this; there could be something else that isn't diabetes that causes ketones in pregnancy. Try not to worry - a dr obiously knows about your condition and is hopefully monitoring you. If you're worried you can buy ketosticks at chemists for about £5 for a box so you could test yourself and put your mind at rest by being sure that your ketones are only a small amount (they are simple to use but they can be hard to read if you've never seen a possitive result - if it doesn't look like it's changed colour much you don't have keetones). But if you are really worried or unsatisfied with what your dr has told you then the best thing to do is just to ask to see another dr who will hopefully explain it better. Hope that helps a bit - good luck xx

Ketones in your urine usually occurs as a result of high blood sugar. I would have your blood sugar tested as soon as possible. It is a simple finger prick. call your doctor.

Ketones are produced in your kidneys due to abnormally high levels of glucose in your bloodstream. You possibly could be experiencing gestational diabetes. Please consult with your physician as they will be able to better guage whether this is only temporary while you are pregnant.

Ketones aren't just a pregnant thing. They happen when you are not getting enough carbs into your system. Your body starts buring stored fat, when there are no carbs to burn. Ketones are somewhat dangerous to your body. That's probably especially true to a growing fetus. If your body is in ketosis while pregnant, you need to eat some bread.

I'm a guy and I've had keytones as well. They may signify diabetes. Ask your doc.
