What is the difference between the two?

It depends on what the Dr. is looking for. A CT would give an overview of the heart but would not be able to define areas of damage from a heart attack or be able to define coronary blockage which is the lead cause of heart attacks. It would also not be able to find damage to the valves.

A ultrasound would be able to detect blood flow thru the valves, if there was valve damage and heart enlargement.

A different kind of scan which is sorta like a CT scan is a cardiolite stress test. it is done in a similar way as a CT but the dye injection shows up areas of damage from a prior heart atack, helps define the blood flow to the arteries and can help the Dr. the prevent future heart damage.

The most definitive test is a Cardio Cathertizion, The Dr.insert a small catheter into a femoral (groin) arty and takes it to the heart. Dye is then injected ad you can actually see the blood flow in the arteries, and can insert a stent 9 a small spring like thing) into the artery to open it up probably preventing open heart surgery. This test also show blood flow in the heart, pressure in which the blood flow thru the heart, and if blood go's backward into the lungs. It is also possible to extend this to include blood flow to the kidneys which can be the cause of high blood pressure.

Hope this helps.

You mean an ultra sound? well it depends what is being searched for I think. But likely a CT scan is more thorough.

Which one does your Cardiologist recommend? I've had so many scans, I don't remember which was which. I think the biggest differences would be which one is covered by insurance. Regardless. Don't let the outcome determine the quality of your life. God bless.
