Well, first of all it isn't a proven fact that you can inherit diabetes, though that issue is being researched by endocrinologists. The truth---there is speculation that it is hereditary to carry a gene that allows your immune system to be overly powerful when coming in contact with specific viruses and fevers, causing the destruction of your insulin cells. This is whats callled juvenial diabetes and you can get this from the condition above. The other kind, Adulthood diabetes can be obtained through obesity, lack of fitness in comparison to your body structures need for excersise, and bad eating habits that cause high blood pressure. Women CAN also get it from not taking care of their diet during pregnancy, that is called gestational diabetes. AND< THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! YOU CAN NOT GET DIABETES FROM EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR!!! IF YOU EXCERSISE AT LEAST FOUR HOURS A WEEK YOU WILL BE FINE!! AND ALSO, DIABETICS CAN EAT SUGARY FOODS! CAKE BROWNIES COOKIES CANDY BREADS ANYTHING! THEY JUST NEED TO GIVE THEMSELVES THE PROPER MEDICATION TO COVER THE CARBOHYDRATES THAT THEY EAT!!

I wouldn't believe much that has been posted up here. It shows a good cross section of the rubish that is sprouted about diabetes and a lot of it by the so called medical profession.
Type 1 is not inherited but the HLA type that makes you prone to develop it is. In my case it developed after I had a mumps type infection. Mostly if you keep to a reasonable diet and have a good lifestyle you should avoid type 2.
I presume you were asking about mellitus and not insipidis.

Just clocked up 41 years and nearly 30,000 injections. Had a bllody good consultant before the days of the "person with Diabetes" crap we get now.

Diabetes is heridatory, but is does not have to be. And the fact that your mother has diabetes, is not the sole reason for you to get it. Diet and lifetsyle plays a role as well.

But let me explain that there are two types of diabetes.

Type 1: The pancreas does not make insuline, or the cells in your body do not use insulin properly. This type of diabetes is treated with insulin injections and diet.

Type 2: Pancreas does not make enough insuline. It develops mainly in people older than 40, and it in many cases diet and lifestyle related. Many obese and overweight people, and people who have an unhealthy diet with lots of sugar and fat.

Type 2 in adults is because you don't exercise, are overweight and have an very bad diet. Will all the high sugars, carbs and fats you consume on a bad / fast food diet your pancreas is working overtime trying to make enough insulin to keep your blood sugars normal. No exercise means your blood sugars will be higher also. If you do this long enough you can develope adult onset type 2 diabetes where you pancreas either stops making insulin or your insulin is of such poor quality that is has little or no effect on your blood sugars.

There are different types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the kind that you get when you're young - your pancreas stops producing insulin so you have to inject it for life. No one knows what causes type 1 diabetes - it is possible that it is partly genetic but there is not enough scientific evidence to know either way - it is not caused by lifestyle, eating too much sweets etc.. Type 2 diabetes is the kind that most people are older when they are diagnosed. As well as genetics (including race as well as close family patterns), lifestyle/diet is known to seriously increase your chances of getting the condition - ie. eating too much sweets and being over weight. No type of diabetes is contageous - you can not catch it from anyone - its just bad luck or bad life choices!

Well there are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 where you are dependant in insulin and this is usually inherited or Type 2 when your diabetes is controlled by diet or medication. Type 2 diabetes is non insulin dependant, but after time it can turn into insulin dependant diabetes.
Type 2 is usually caused by lifestyle factors, such as obesity. If you are seriously overweight you can develop an insulin resistance. Insulin is made by cells in your pancreas when you eat and reduces blood sugar levels. If these cells become damaged and resistant to insulin you have Type 2 diabetes and there is no or very little insulin released to lower blood sugar levels. If left untreated it will cause irreversible kidney damage, damage to your eyes causing diabetic retinopathy, bamage to nerve endings, and damage to your cardivascular system putting you at higher risk of a stroke and heart disease.

There are two types of diabetes, type one and type two.
Type one is unavoidable and often genetic, but is treatable and able to bring under control.

Type two is largely related to poor dietary intake, excessive sugar in all types of foods (not just sweet) over a long period of time and obesity. However... type two is a form of diabetes that can be controlled easily and if a dramatic change of life style occurs can be reversed.

The main one is being over weight or obese. Eating a diet of very sugary things so that the body secretions of insulin cannot cope with the level and thus one become diabetic.

everything everyone else said is true but I'd like to expand on it. An injury to the pancreas, or as a result to some chemo meds, and or steroids. I know of 2 teen girls both rail thin that are type 2 due to 1 the steroids she takes with her chemo, and the other girl was a premature at birth and needed steroids thus causing damage and now she is type 2. I also know a grown man that suffered a fall damaged his pancreas and he is a type 1. His damage was that severe.
