Hi, my regular m.d. doctor told me that my "bad" cholestrol was extremely to high (@ 290), and my "good" cholestrol is extremely low (@ 30). her point being, that i was in a one in twelve chance of having heart problems and/or stroke victim. i am a forty two year old lady, (if that helps in any way,,didn't help me puttin down my age!). okay, now my question, everywhere i go to get information on how to lower my cholestrol, it ends up asking me for a credit card. does anyone know of any book, website, anything~basically that i can just get information without trading my first born?

im sorry i have to say this, but what kind of doctor did you just see ? i mean, after seeing this person he/she should have answered all your questions and queries by now... he/she should have furnished you with literature to enlighten you and guide you in your goal to a healthier lifestyle... i find it really sad that you have to ask strangers in the internet when your doctor is supposed to be your friend... pls check out medscape, its an online med forum, you can actually subscribe to it and they will send you regularly anything you want to know about a particular condition, normally this site is used by doctors but if you checked that you are non-medical, the journals tjhat they will send you will be in a " language " that you can understand...thanks , hopefully i was of some help to you, thanks

Essentially, LDL (bad) cholesterol is controlled by diet. There are drugs that block absorbtion or metabolism but diet is the most effective way of controlling LDL cholesterol.

HDL (good) cholesterol can also be controll to a smaller degree by diet, however you will see the biggest increases in HDL cholesterol if you increase your aerobic exercise.

The Heart Foundation of your country will give you free advice and booklets about lowering your bad cholesterols and increasing your good cholesterols.

In short bad cholesterols are present in animal fats and good cholesterols are found in vegetable oils, nuts, advocado, and many dairy spreads and yoghurts contain something called plant sterols which will help with your cholesterol balance.

Of course the staples of exercise, plenty of sleep, water, fruit and vegetable will help ensure your heart health

I suggest you use any of the numerous search engines on the web to find info on "Cholesterol". There you will have many links to what you need to know about this problem and the options available to you. It is unfortunate your GP was not able to give you simple guidelines as to how to go about it, but I am sure you will find all you need to know by proceeding as said above. Good luck.

anyway, before i also had that problem but not that very intense..
Diet can help you solve your problem........

Eat less fat and salt diet......
Eat more green leafy vegetable. I heard that oats can do the trick
or try reading herbal books .....

The numbers you provide sound like they may be TOTAL cholesterol and good cholesterol. However, if your LDL's ARE 290 then I think you should consider starting medication.

Studies have shown that even with a good diet and exercise then people are able to affect their levels by 15%, consistently. You need to get your LDL down to 130 (more than 50% of where you are now) if you have no other risk factors.

If you have other risk factors (immediate family history of heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, and/or smoking history) then your LDL should be at 100 or less.

When looking for health information consider reputable hospitals and university medical web sites. Organizations such as the American Heart Association are also good. These sites cost nothing to access and provider very reliable information.
