Good question... must be because they took a bunch of that over-the-counter drug that dries up the mucous membranes and shuts down the lungs' ability to expell bacteria and toxins through normal coughing. This is not a good idea. A cold is a cleanse for the body and does its level best to get rid of all the stuff that is creating illness. It wants it OUT and now.... and then you will be able to sleep. When you load yourself down with all the cures and wonder drugs you are just stopping up the normal cleansing process. In the meantime, it is really helpful to diffuse pure, unadulterated essential oils, such as lemon and eucalyptus. These little wonder molecules actually assist in the cleansing and healing process and raise the vibrational level of the body as they go about repairing the body at a cellular level. I generally also keep a bottle of Thieves (cinnamon, cloves and rosemary) and peppermint essential oil nearby to inhale when it feels like I can't breathe. Rosemary oil in a bowl of hot water is the perfect steam. Essential for people with respiratory challenges, if you'll forgive the pun.

All the best!

You are asleep, for one thing, and because of nasal congestion, you are probably breathing through your mouth. While lying down, your sinus passages drain the mucus fluids to the back of your nose and throat--as well as they can because of the thickness. Once you sit up, your sinuses drain down to your nose, necessitating you to blow and blow to temporarily clear the passages.

Because with you head laying flat, it will stay where it is at or drain down your throat. Fluid tends to flow in the direction downwards because of gravity. When you are sleeping your nostrils tend to be perpendicular relative to the direction of gravity.
