T.A.R. stands for total aerosol retained. It means all the post-combustion, non-nicotine, chemical components that a smoker takes into his/her body system with every puff. In fact, T.A.R. is THE cause of all those deadly diseases like lung cancer and bronchaitis and CVDs. Nicotine is soluble in water; therefore, the nicotine that we take in has a strong possibility of being washed away. But the T.A.R. components are not soluble and they create layers on on and around lung or heart.

Among the many thousand components of T.A.R., at least 80 have been bio-chemically (not just statistically) tested as carcinogenic. NIcotine is not bio-chemically tested as carcinogenic. But T.A.R. is.

The tobacco industry calls T.A.R. "NFDPM" which stands for "Nicotine free dry particle matter".

I hope that answers your question.

Reported cases of lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pneumonitis due to marijuana smoking are not common, because in most cases those affected also smoked cigarettes. However, there is no reason to believe that smoking marijuana is at least as bad as tobacco, since most tobacco is cleaned and consistent. Remember, it is not the nicotine that causes cancer and health problems, but the vaporized hydrocarbons from the soot. So let's see, with marijuana you have all the health problems from smoking tobacco, with at least as much impairment as alcohol (with the addition that you are more likely to kill someone else while impaired than yourself in a car accident). Gee, that sounds like a good life decision to me...
