I want to serve my guests with hot plates (keeping the main dish on the plates in the oven so food doesn't cool) how do I know if my plates can resist the heat? I don't think the oven would be on any higher than 150 or whatever necessary to keep the food warm while the soup/salad is served....

It's not good to put good China in the oven. If it's Gorham I would really worry about it. But, the smartest thing to do is to contact the manufacturer. Gorham is still in business and I am sure that they would be more than happy to tell you what to do. Ok, I didn't really answer your question, but if you google the company, you can get a phone number for them and go to the source. Better to be safe than sorry. You don't want to have to replace the pieces. I do not put my good china in the oven, I only put everyday pieces in. Good luck, make that phone call.

If you have your oven on just the warm setting your plates should be fine for the small amount of time you are talking about.
I used to work for a catering company and we kept china plates in warmers all the time for dinners we served.

For safety, try and use dishes that are ovenproof, check on the bottom of the dish if they are.

What brand are they, google it or phone the store where you bought them. No name, try something else.
