I know sex can actually alleviate prostatitis but can the bacteria from that and the bladder infection be passed back and forth?

yes it can transmit the bacteria from him to you...so i would avoid having sex as it may be harmful to you and his situation may worsen-so have him see a dr and get treated...if it's a urinary infection, it will go away but with time and proper antibiotics...if he's got a repeat history of UTI's, then he better get screened as it maybe a sign of something chronic: prostatis and you don't want to play with that or even his kidneys getting affected in the long run...he's gotta get rid of toxins in his body...and if that bacteria is sitting there long enough, it will strain his natural "plumbing" system...so don't take chances!

Prostatitis is an infection that likely occurs due to bacteria that have entered the prostatic ducts from the rectum and/or as a result of a backward flow of infected urine.

Prostatitis is not a contagious condition and is not considered a sexually transmitted disease. It can result, however, from several different sexually transmitted diseases.

How the prostate becomes infected is not clearly understood. The bacteria that cause prostatitis might get into the prostate from the urethra by backward flow of infected urine or stool from the rectum.

At one time, prostatitis was believed to be a sexually transmitted disease, but more recent research suggests that only a small number of cases are passed on through sex.

The same applies to bladder or urinary tract infections, neither are contagious.
