He was a riot! I watched him everyday after school. Not for the recipes, just because it was so funny watching him get sloshed!

I am not sure if we are thinking of the same show, but Keith Floyd had a series of cooking shows where he pretty freely drank wine during cooking. I don't remember anyone doing that with champagne, though. Also, it depends on what country you're writing from, since the TV programs are different.

I believe you are referring to The Galloping Gourmet! He was a blast. I recall the episode where he was making dishes from bugs, and they cut the camera as he was running ready to barf!
I've seen him on TV as a guest, and allegedly he's sober now. Really miss that show.
