HPV is a name of a group of viruses that can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, or have no effect on the body. Something like 80% of women will have one or more strain of the virus in her life time and in most cases, the body will fight off the virus to a point where it is no longer detectable by medical test.

The test can be done during your regular Pap smear but unless your Pap shows cell abnormalities, it usually will not be done. You can request that your doctor orders the test because you may have been exposed to the virus.

After 3 years, you would think that the relationship is strong enough to overcome this but I guess in this case he could not deal with it. He may feel ashamed or guilty or does not want to further increase your chances of exposure. You can try giving him time to get over the shock of the diagnosis or you can move on knowing that your relationship was not strong enough to weather life's ups and downs (remember the marriage vow- In sickness and in health).

Because he is a man and many of the strains do not cause symptoms, I am going to assume that he has genital warts which prompted the check up. Usually those strains do not cause cancer but he may have more than one strain so you need to get checked out regularly by a doctor (your yearly GYN exam is fine unless there are problems).

Sorry to hear about your boyfriend. He may have broken up with you so as not to give you his HPV (it's very contagious).

Get yourself tested for HPV. You can have it and not know it. You can get that done at your Gyn.

See a doctor and ask, if you don't have a doctor go to a county clinic or Planned Parenthood, they do more than just offer abortions.
