I have to tell you it is not cheap here in Canada either, and with the recent hurricane in Jamaica and the Caribbean island it is going to get more pricey, here in Canada we pay between $4.00-8.00 a can, around 2-3 pounds in UK currency, try to find a Caribbean or West Indian/Jamaican shop, as they do sell it frozen here, it is nicer and is not as salty from the brine. In London you should have not problem with all the West Indian people there, I was in the area last ime I was in London, best to check the directory under Caribbean food shops, ring them and see what stock is on hand before trapsing around London for a tin or frozen ackee's.

That's the sound you make after trying what's in the jar.
"Ackee!"

It's a jamaican fruit that is to be cooked before eating. It's very good, especially with salt (cod) fish.
