Chippers in England and Ireland started using newspaper during the depression era because it was cheaper and most of the vinegar and oil was soaked up by it so thats why even today in many chippers you'll still get you grub but wrapped in newpaper print instead.

Fish And Chips In Newspaper

People have already said it's cheap, absorbs extra oil, etc but I just wanted to say, when I was in England, at every place where I got fish and chips, they wrapped it in plain brown paper. It's cleaner than newspaper. I don't think anyone uses newspaper anymore.

Absolute ambrosia! There was nothing in the world that could beat fish and chips on the way home from the 'pictures', wrapped in newspaper to keep it all lovely and warm. Surely it would be environmentally friendly to return to this. I cannot remember getting black on my hands but I do remember what Bear calls 'scrumps' although I have never heard that particular word before. We did not get this free but had to pay one or two pennies for it but you got absolutely heaps of it - usually plenty to share between two or three friends. Thankfully we had never heard of cholesterol.

It absorbes the grease, it`s cheap and it`s a great way to make the food portable. BUt most importantly it`s the traditional way... Don`t know who came up with the idea, but probably a british guy. Newspapers are easy to get a hold of, and during the depression they didn`t really have alot of choices and newspapers seemed to do the job.

It has been illegal to sell fish and chips in news paper for a long time now. Something to do with health and safety. They use plain white paper now.
