You shall have no other Gods.

This means that you are to put nothing in your life in a higher position than the one true God. Do not worship money, images, life or possessions, above God.

. The Ten Commandments: The Simple Way a Father Should Present Them to His Household

A. The First Commandment

You must not have other gods.

Q. What does this mean?

A. We must fear, love, and trust God more than anything else.

We are told "Thou shall have no other God but me." GOD takes presidence over all things on this earth. HE is more important than your makeup, your money, your home, job, and family. The Sunday football game that is so important that you must leave HIS SERVICE early is not really right either! We have an obligation to follow the New Testament Teachings as Christians not the Old Testament teachings. We are told that "the Old Law is for our learning." I hope that this helps in your studies. Have a great week.

I am the Lord your G-d that has brought you out of Egypt.

This is the first Commandment of the the Jewish faith (there are two different lists of Commandments in the Holy Scriptures).

This is a declaration from G-d, that He is the true G-d.

The second Commandment is---You shall have no gods but ME

This is the second reminder that there is no G-d but G-d. They both state that we must always remember that He is G-d, the Almighty.

To say obligation is to assume you beleive in GOD and the commandments.
It says Thou shalt have no other GODs before me.

I guess I am having trouble with the word obligation. I think the sentence is pretty clear. Nothing comes before GOD, not money, possessions, relationships etc. It goes on to clarify not to make any graven images to worship. So I think to answer your quesiton means to put GOD first above everything else you might love. It is not our obligation for we have free will and we can choose to disobey if we want GOD gave us free choice but if you insist on using the word obligation I would say well since he gave us this earth, brought us to life etc we are obligated to worship him first for without him none of this would be possible. But I don't think God wants us to put him first out of obligation but out of genuine love for him. Just my thoughts

No obligation. It was written by moses for a specific purpose, to control a group of people and religion has been using it in the smae way ever since.

The "First commandment" In Hebrew it is called a "word", just as the Messiah is called "The Word" (as in The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us--John 1:14) In Lev 20:2,3 we read "I am YHVH your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of 'Egypt', out of the house of slavery. You have no other mighty ones against My face.". "Against my face" is Hebrew Idiom which means "above Me" "before Me" or maybe more literally "in front of Me" I quote from THE SCRIPTURES from the Institute for Scripture Research. The Sacred name is in the original (Hebrew) Scriptures about 6800 times. It is the most important word in the entire "Old Testament" Many times He says, "call upon My Name" and yet "translators" have seen fit to substitue a pagan name in clear violation of the rule in Ex. 23:13. The word "Elohim" is simply the plural of the Hebrew word which means very powerful. The plural might refer to the powers. No one knows for sure.

In my mind this command obliges me to hold God first. Meaning nothing should be more important (IE. money). It also prohibits me from worshiping more than one God such as the ancient Romans did.

There's only one God who we adore and worship. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
It requires us to believe in Him love, hope, serve and obey Him.
It forbids heresy, schism, apostasy, superstition , astrology, palm reading, fortune telling, sacriledge, simony, polytheism , magic, tempting God, atheism, idols like power, money and sex. It aslo forbids the sins of pride, tepidity, hatred of God, unthankfulness.
