I live in an apartment and I get off work M-F around noon. I know some people think people who work shouldn't have pets, but all pet owners have to work in order to have money to afford their pets! I think my work schedule is pretty nice 4:30am-noon M-F. I have the rest of the day to spend with the pet. However, I do live in an apartment (on the third floor) so I am looking for a dog that is relatively quiet and can do fine by themselves those hours I'm at work. I've contemplated even getting a kitten and a pup at the same time so they can play together. However, I'm not sure that is the best solution. Any ideas on what breed will be okay while I'm at work, is relatively quiet, and is under 10lbs. Does that dog even exist? I've been researching this for quite some time and I've looked at Yorkies, Pomeranians and Papillons. I need advice.

Keep in mind small dogs like to pee alot. I have a Yorkie that can't hold it to save his life. Try a cock-a-poo. Or stick to a cat...they can use the litter box...just get it fixed this will reduce the chance of spraying.

I would say anything small, but you'd be surprised at the work a dog will be for you, even if you have the time. The third floor? Why not just stick with the kitten? Seriously, the cat could be indoors 24/7, no walks and no noise. If you DO get a dog get a monitor because they can do some crazy stuff when you're not home, like bark, and drive your neighbors (who are RIGHT there, by the way) crazy, and you have no idea because you aren't there. I tried having adog in an amaprtment situation and it was not fun. They really need a yard to run around in, contained. Good luck.

You can own a Toy Dog, Small Dog, Medium dog. I had a small dog and I curerntly have a Toy Dog.
Your hours are not that horrible to have a dog, in fact I think your hours are great. Simple because it's the morning and most dogs sleep during the morning until mid-morning. I would say in the afternoon they have their high peak of energy (sometimes mid-morning).
As for the 10lb dog yes they do exist, mostly Toy Breeds. I know my toy dog reached 13lbs and I didn't even know because she looks as if she's 8lbs and she's really active. It's weird.
Your looking in all the right directions Yorkes, Papillons (are so freaking cute. In my dog training course there's a 4 moth old one and she's incredibly small and so quite). Maltese (as the above post stated) are a good breed to look into.
I would say the only problem with having an apartment and a do (for me at least) is the house training. Luckily the only place that I have carpet is in my bedroom. My other rooms are tile and old wood flooring.
Good Luck.
P.S. I have a miniture pinscher (Toy Breed) and she's a barker. They state they're ideal for apartment living, because of the size and that they don't have to go out walking all the time. But they are HIGH in energy and bark A LOT. Mines barks naturally, I addopted her and she didn't really bark @ me. Good Luck.

My sister lives in a two story apartment with her two dogs and works unbelievable hours. She owns a maltese X shitzsu & a maltese X shitzsu X poodle. Her dogs are both female and only bark when she comes home or if there are visiters at the door. This breed of dog is known to be suitable for most families. They are great people pets. From kids to the elderly. Its a shame so many are dumped. The maltese has the highest percentage rate of dumping. There is a section on the RSPCA website where you fill out your details and preferences for breeds of dogs and the site filters the breeds out for you. There is also one of these availbale at petnet. I have placed the link below.

My sister lives in an appartment in kansas city and she or he has a rottweiler yet she walks her daily and they enable enormous canines. Her appartment has a mess of area for a huge canines too regardless of the reality that maximum houses dont and her rottwelier is kinda small for most rottweilers because it became over breed and breed way too youthful as a canines a minimum of thats what the shelter instructed her also dont enable human beings inform you aparmtnets dont have a lot of area because my sisters house is the same length as are living house its a 2 mattress room and in case you stay on the decrease floor they have a out door gate about 10X10 lots for a canines

I would try a chihuahua. They are the smallest dog, and make great pets. I have one and he hardly ever barks, and he loves everyone though he prefers me. You will have to socialize them with other people and animals, or they can become very nervous of strangers, and very protective of you. I have children and a bunch of other animals so mine would have been social just staying at the house, but I bought a small carrier and take mine almost everywhere I go. He loves to get in the car and go out and about, and it is not hard to take a small dog out. I would crate train any small dog you get though so they do not get in to something that can hurt them while you are at work.

Why does it have to be under 10 lbs? Is it the apartment's rule? Smaller dog is not necessarily less active. You need a couch potato kind of dog. One who likes to sleep on the sofa while you're at work. Also, small dogs have small bladders and can't hold it for long. Any kind of dog needs to go out and play. Look into medium dogs too. Calm, maybe even lazy, not hyper.
