Here's what the EPA says about gasoline engine fumes from automobiles:
*
"Emissions from cars contain many different noxious gases, including several known human carcinogens. In fact, the EPA estimates that automobile fumes account for over 50% of all cancers attributed to outdoor causes."

I'll take my chances in an electric car.

Sageands has got it. At least in terms of the energy conversion fossil fuel plants are much more efficient than gasoline motors. Now, I'm not so sure how that works out on a lbs CO2 basis comparison. I worked in a fossil fuel plant for 27 years. 800 wind turbines still might be cheaper and better for the environment than fossil fuels. Still definitely cheaper than nuke. The new batteries are getting to be a usable solution. In our neck of the woods swamp coolers work well, and they are made for autos. An old volkswagen gas heater in the winter would work and those are still made. Could modify it to burn ethanol/methanol and then make my own... In other words, its not the cure-all some are touting it as but they have reached the realm of a useful tool, especially for commutting to work. I normally drive a Honda Civic for around town, but it shed the cam belt and my mechanic hasn't gotten it replaced yet so I'm driving my winter/offroad activity Chevy Pickup and boy does it get lousy mileage. So, if the Civic is unrepairable, I may try an electric car. But I'll keep my Chevy for backup and snowstorms. But, I prefer having 2 vehicles to deal with mechanical troubles anyhow. BTW, at work I drive a 12000 pound Ford and normally put about 125 miles daily on it with 30 miles of 4 wheel driving. No way electric is ready for that. Yet.

Electricity must be contained in things like wires,
so don't worry.
