He will be lying on the opposite side of the house then run growling to the door to be let out. Then he scampers far away barking and howling.

I live on a rural property so there's a fair space for him to run around, and also plenty of things for him to be chasing (cows, rabbits, goannas etc). But how does he know there's something out there when he's sleeping? Or is he just hallucinating?

You live on a rural property....I am guessing he is hearing or smelling something that you can't see/smell.

Would the smell of coffee percolating and bacon frying in your room wake you up? How about someone dropping a dictionary on the floor next to your bed? A dog's senses are much keener than ours and to him something outside may be just as apparent as something in your room would be to you.

If you honestly think he's hallucinating, call your vet and ask. The last thing you need is a dog on a farm who decides the livestock has turned into a threat.

Your dog can hear things that you don't. The reason for him to be chasing and barking at seemingly nothing is that he obviously thinks that his territory extends far beyond the front yard. Try a bark collar.

I figured he just wants to go outside or something, dogs also hear
a thousand times better than humans so he'll know exactly what's going on out there before we even realize there is some-
thing out there,cool no?

Most likely your dog was dreaming. Then when he woke up he thought it was real and took off.
My dogs dream all the time and wake up barking. (But they usually don't "chase" anything)

Dogs have a very strong sense of smell and hearing... though you may not see or hear anything your dog can recognize the faintest sound or odor.

animals and babies sense spirits. They are very sensitive. Maybe your dog is trying to defend you from a spirit passing by.
