Last-minute fares on international travel is rarely (if ever) discounted. Your best bet is to call a travel agent; a good travel agent can combine different flights to get you a better deal. You might have an extra connection, or a change in carriers, but you could save some serious money. For example, if you are travelling from London to Sydney, a web search might turn up only flights that connect through Los Angeles and San Francisco. A travel agent might be able to route you in the other direction--- London to Tokyo, for example, or connecting in Madrid, or many other options--- that may get you a lower fare. You might have to "work" harder while travelling--- an extra change of planes, or claim your bags from one airline then check them back in on a second airline, or longer flight times--- but it might be worth the money. These alternate routes don't usually appear in search engines because most travellers don't want them, or because they cannot be booked on a single airline.
