Good question! The usage and utility of solar energy seeming still not so in an efficient manner is the maintanence problem.
Another thing is this becomes difficult on rainy, foggy or cloudy days.
It may be of this reason that the solar cells costs considerably.

There is a lot of good points so far.

What all the following crap was about is trying to show you that it is the frame of mind people have. They will totaly waste money on something that is not needed or useful in any and can't in any way pay for it's self but in the same breath say that solar electric has to pay for it's self in cold hard cash or it is not worth it.

I did not set in the dark like the other 300,000 people did when the ice storms came through. When the grid goes down I have lights and heat. Do you? So which pays for it's self a corvette or solar electric with backup power?

Yes Solar Energy cost big time to get installed

Yes Solar Energy can pay for it's self over time which will make it free in the end just people don't have the money to invest to get it all started.

If most people in the USA had $70,000 and was going to buy a car they would buy a corvette. Why? Who knows. They think it gives them power and makes them look like they are rich. I think I would buy a small Chevy truck for $20,000 and $10,000 on Wind electric and $40,000 on solar electric with battery backup grid tied. Now I have an auto and free electric for the next 30 or so years.

However a small truck would not make you look like you are rich so that would be out.. The electric power plant you could save a little money can't be driven to the night club to show off how cool you are so that is out.

So why would you want solar electric and save the planet and have extra money when you could have a Vet and burn more gas and party more.

The car will be trash in 5 years or less if you don't get drunk and crash it first. But the solar would be there for years and years and might even out last you. Makes your home worth more at resale too.

Naw.. Get the high dollar car..

Yes, solar energy is available for free but it is not utilised because many people are not aware and many other's are illetrate. If anybody is thinking about it, but they have no money to buy any machine which work on the basis of solar energy.
Goverment should provide machines and have to spread awareness about it.

they haven't found a consumer-friendly (expensive) way to store and use that energy. It's the same with wind energy, they don't know how to store it. So basically they have to pray that it'll be sunny every single day or very windy every single day.

There are some other problems as well. Not many people own big properties where they can lay down all the solar panels they'll need to power up their homes. Most people also find that the wind turbines are too noisy.

It isn't used so widely because solar energy is used to produce electricity with the help of silicon chips that are very costly. Also it is not available everytime due to bad weather and during the night.

It is hard to extensively collect and utilise solar energy. We could place solar panels all over the Sahara, but that costs too much to be feasible.

the main reason being its cost of utilisation.

solar water heaters cost near about 1 lakh away from the reach of common man.
solar cells are need to be in group for produvction of sufficient electricity to be used in home.
this makes them costly though they are made of silicon one of the abundant element in earth but we need high grasde pure silicon for solar cell which makes it costly and also silver is used in connecting each solar cell so it reaaches a high price for the system which is also away from the reach of common man so i find only solar cooker that too box type in which baking cant be done which is probably find in most places in india as it is not so costly

so u see out of common three ways we utilise only 1 way so this makes solar energy unpopular and not utilised to its potential.

The equipment for converting solar energy into something that you can use is very expensive. If you covered your entire house with solar panels, you wouldn't make enough electricity to power your house, and it would cost about $50,000.
