yes, you can. if you want a cable line, which is best value when combined with cable TV, then go to www.ntl.com or www.telewest.com to see if you're in their cabled areas.

if not, or if you don;t want to be stuck with their offering, then check to see if you're in a LLU (local loop unbundling) area, whereby other companies install their equipment in local BT phone exchanges. however, most of them are geared towards combining broadband with their phone line so they make more money off you.

if you only want a phone line, try going to www.uswitch.com and go through the questions, then on the third screen, click the box for Wholesale Line Rental. however, some providers ask you for your BT phone number when you want to sign up, they're not suitable for new line installations.

Bulldog is one which doesn't and sometimes has good deals on new line installations (eg, £1 for a new line), but they're not great for customer service and phone calls aren't great value.

Sure NTL & Cable & Wireless have nothing to do with BT. NTL are my suppliers for everything, Hard phone lines, call, digital TV and broadband.

get a cell phone you can have it on anyones property without involving bt.
